Frequently Asked Questions
Q: I source fabric from China. Can I use AfCFTA?
A: Not for those goods. AfCFTA benefits apply to goods produced or sufficiently processed in Nigeria. Reselling imported goods without processing does not qualify.
Q: My buyer is in Ghana. Do I need a Certificate of Origin?
A: Yes. Without it, your buyer cannot claim the AfCFTA preferential tariff rate.
Q: What if my buyer refuses to pay after I ship?
A: This is why payment arrangements must be agreed before shipping — never ship without advance payment, escrow, or a confirmed Letter of Credit.
Q: Are raw agricultural commodities always exportable if I have a Certificate of Origin?
A: No. Certificate of Origin confirms AfCFTA eligibility, but some commodities carry separate export restrictions (for example, Nigeria's current restriction on raw shea nut exports). Always verify current export status for your specific product before sourcing goods or committing to a buyer.
Q: How do I find buyers in other African countries?
A: Start with existing networks, trade associations, and NEPC matchmaking programs. Trade Africa's community connects traders navigating the same corridors.
Q: Is AfCFTA fully implemented yet?
A: Not completely — it's being rolled out in phases. Tariff reductions are in progress, the Simplified Trade Regime is in pilot phase, and digital systems are still being built. Early, informed traders have the advantage as these systems mature.
